After attending the introductory year at the Kleinkunst Academie in Amsterdam and studying School Music for one year, the tenor Mark Omvlee (born in 1977) graduated in May 2003 as a student of Hein Meens at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. He studied with Marcel Reijans and Miranda van Kralingen and is currently coached by Gemma Visser.
Already before graduating, Mark was contracted by the children’s opera company Xynix (now Holland Opera), for which he has sung various roles throughout the Netherlands, both on location and in theatres. The reportoire comprised both baroque opera’s and new music in Dutch. Other performance opportunities arose for Mark – among others at the Grachtenfestival – and he made his debut in the Zaterdag Matinee series in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam. By 2006, he had already debuted at Opera Zuid in the title role of Mavra. After performing this role for multiple seasons, Mark is now a member of the soloists ensemble of Opera Zuid, for which he’ll perform the tenor parts in Tsaar Saltan, Falstaff, Hänsel und Gretel, Nozze di Figaro, Der Rosenkavalier and die Zauberflöte.
Nevertheless, Mark’s career as a concert singer will not be pushed into the background. He will jump at any opportunity to sing his favorite role of the Evangelist in Bach’s St. John or St. Matthew Passion. Moreover, he enjoys the challenge of extending his already vast oratorium repertoire. And in between performances and rehearsals, he will also continue to do voice-over work for TV, DVD and film productions; besides his career as a singer he is the exclusive Disney-approved Dutch voice of Mickey Mouse.
